Harmen Liemburg
Netherlands |
Harmen Liemburg was Born in Lisse, the Netherlands, 1966. He studied Social Geography/Cartography at Utrecht University and graduated in 1992. While working freelance as a cartographer, he studied Graphic Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. After an exchange program with Virginia Commonwealth University's Art Department and an intership at Oven Digital in New York, he graduated in 1998.
In 1998 he started a collaboration with graphic designer Richard Niessen as 'The Golden Masters'. While working for clients, a major part of this period was spent organising the 'JACK' cultural events in Amsterdam. At the same time he was part of the 'Sec.' editorial and design team: a magazine showcasing the work of young photographers and other imagemakers. Since 2003, Liemburg is working solo or in collaboration with other artists.
After producing a substantial body of work at 'Interbellum', the screenprinting studio of his former teacher Kees Maas, Liemburg has grown to be an accomplished screenprinting artist himself, giving workshops and lectures internationally. The technique enables him to produce and publish graphic work independently, and has thus has been a major force in his Do It Yourself attitude. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Les Arts Décoratifs Paris and The Plakat-/Grafiksammlung Zuerich.
Liemburg's work is positioned somewhere between graphic design, illustration, fine art, research and journalism, and has been published in numerous international magazines, books and blogs. While developing his authorship as an imagemaker, Liemburg also started writing about visual culture, mainly for the Dutch design magazine ITEMS. His posters are frequentely selected at international poster festivals, and were in 2006 awarded with bronze at Toyama and silver at Chaumont. His projects have had the frequent support of the Dutch Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. In 2007 he joined AGI.
